The Farmers

Greg

As a boy, Greg spent countless hustling hours caring for cows, pigs, and chickens as he learned the value of hard work. He completed an accounting degree in hopes of owning his own business someday, hopes that are now coming true!

After marrying Denise in 1987, Greg spent many weekends helping Denise’s mother Betty with her 100-head Longhorn farm. This farm included a notable bloodline purchased from King Ranch outside of Corpus Christi, Texas, necessitating even more careful attention to rounding up, steering, and keeping the calves healthy to preserve and grow that bloodline.

Now as the father of an empty-nest home of three kids, Greg is happy to own a smaller version of the farm he helped tend as a young man and grateful for the lessons he learned during that time. His days are spent spreading sweet feed, putting out hay, rotating fields, and watching the Broadwaters’ Texas ladies for potential calving. When he’s not working, you can often find him sitting on the porch with Denise and a glass of sweet tea watching the cows graze.

Denise

Denise lived with a bevy of animals as she grew up. Early on, her mother Betty always had groups of pigs, a hen house, and even a cow in the field or tied in the back yard. As an adult, Denise also put her back into hard work at the family Longhorn farm.

A psychotherapist during the week, Denise considers the farm to be her therapy. She has raised 17 pullets in hopes of eggs starting in the summer of 2021. These young chickens consist of Buff Orpingtons, Cochins, and Rhode Island Reds. Next she hopes to venture into owning Kunekune (KOO-nee KOO-nee) pigs, a unique heritage breed. She is working with a top breeder in an effort to make Broadwater Farm a rare purveyor of Kunekunes in South Carolina.

Denise has always possessed the gift of hospitality and has been pouring her heart into Broadwater Farm from the first promise of the property. She hopes to make it a place where anyone who visits can find refreshment, renew, and recharge. Her time after a long day regularly consists of sitting on the porch with Greg and petting their demanding cat Layla, whose job it is to rid the farm of harmful rodents. Layla is picking up her natural talents quite well.
